Ashtanga Closing Chant by Guruji
Swasthi prajabhyah pari pala yantam
Nyayena margena mahim mahishaha
Gobrahmannebhyaha shubamastunityam
Lokah samastha sukhino bhavantu
Om shanti, shanti, shanti...
Let prosperity be glorified
Let rulers (administrators) rule the world with law and justice
Let all things divine be protected
Let people of the world be happy, peaceful and free
Om peace, peace, peace

A POEM FOR GURUJI
Forever sweating with your leg behind your head
I'm sure you would much rather be in Padmasana instead
breathing deeply amongst other sounds,
the soft counting of Guruji, his lotus feet upon the ground
All matter of judgement is cast away from here
Fly above the aching bodies, breath it in....breath it out.
Watch the freedom dance around the room, Guruji can see it,
Floating and gliding, circling his head
drifting in and out of his mind - so perfectly designed
He chuckles as it lingers around a humble student, always a step behind
then coming back to drift around his mind
A burst of colour light and song
as the students echo Guruji's OM
I wonder the thoughts his head creates even just to ponder on
I'm sure they are more complicated than just a simple OM

Respect to the Guru
Yoga Manila paid its respect to Guruji last Sunday by having a small tribute to him at the Alabang studio.
Hoze Arando, probably one of the very few Filipino ashtangis who have studied with Guruji in the old shala, shared his experience in meeting and studying with Guruji in 1999 and 2000. Fellow YM teacher Becky led the chanting of the Gayatri mantra and the Heart Sutra.
I guess, it's was like my relationship with both my paternal and maternal grandfathers... I never really got to build a relationship with them because they both passed away even before I was born.
For Guruji, it was like meeting one of my grandfathers and not really knowing what to do whenever I was in his presence... but there was a feeling of sincere gratitude and respect. Gratitude and respect for sharing to us this great practice called Ashtanga.

I learned from fellow YM teachers that Paul and I were born on the same day, May 19, with Paul older by 6 years. Good sign.

Our teacher Paul's tribute to Guruji...
In loving memory of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, "Guruji"

(This is a personal account of my connection with a great teacher. For a more detailed biography of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois please read Alex Medin's very well written article about him, his life and work. Also view Barry Silver's pictorial to music.)
