Galler Belgian Chocolates and Shamiana Indian Cuisine

Sometimes, it pays to know people, specially fellow Filipinos here in the Kingdom. You'll get to get some freebies or have a taste of world-famous Belgian chocolates for free, hahahaha.

Last night after practice, I tagged along with housemates to go shopping, or using M's term "retail therapy". Wednesday is basically my free day except for some online attendance updating and class upkeeping.

The married housemates usually shop until the malls or the supermarkets close at around 12 midnight so I seldom join them. It felt right to just hang out with them last night so I did.

When we got to Danube Supermarket/Hyatt Mall, Mhar saw an acquaintance at the Galler Shop so we got some free taste of their products. I tell you, it was worth staying up late and not being able to wake up at 4:30am for pranayama. Not really good at using words to describe my experience so I'll you with, "it was heaven and pure indulgence".

Next stop, Auntie Anne's Pretzel. Ruby, Mhar's wife who's about to give birth in less than 2 weeks, was craving for Auntie Anne's pretzels since two nights ago. Realized that maybe if I'm not very active and don't moderate my sugar intake, I might end up having diabetes because of my sweet tooth.

Then, we passed by a watch store and drooled over some really nice Fossil watches. Maybe if I have some cash left at the end of this year, I'll get one. My sight is set on travelling so I need to save up for that.

Last stop was the food court and I saw a new sign, "Shamiana Tandoori and Indian Cuisine". Checked out their menu and decided to get the tikka panner with naan but unfortunately, they didn't have it anymore as it was almost closing time. I opted for the other vegetarian combo which has mixed veggie curry and curried chickpeas. It was good. It also came with rice biryani, naan, papad and dhal. The dhal was great. I wasn't hungry so I just had a taste and took it home. That will be lunch later.

Lentil and Spinach

Had this for dinner last night... with steamed rice.

INGREDIENTS
1/2 cup brown lentils, soaked in water for 20-30 minutes
a whole bunch of spinach... probably 4 cups total
1 tsp mustard seeds
1 tsp cumin seeds
1 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp curry powder
1/2 tsp turmeric
1 vegetable stock cube
3-5 cups water
1-2 tbsp vegetable oil

INSTRUCTION
Heat the oil n a small saucepan. Reduce heat and add the mustard seeds. Wait until it starts to pop and then add the cumin seeds. Keep the heat to a minimum to prevent burning the spices. Add the rest of the spices. Mix well. Add the lentils. Mix well. Add the water and increase the heat. Once it starts to boil, reduce heat, and let the lentil cook for about 20 minutes. You can add the stock cube halfway through the process and you may need to add more water at some point. Once the lentil is done, add the spinach, mix well. Cover the saucepan, increase the heat for one minute and turn it off after. Let the steam cook the greens. Once the greens are wilted, your lentil and spinach dish is ready to serve.

Lentil is a good source of protein for vegetarians. Combined with rice, it provides all the essential amino acids that the body needs. Here's a link to Vegetarian Society's Protein Information Sheet.

Enigamata Treehouse Ecolodge in Camiguin

Googling for inexpensive places to stay in Camiguin Island, I was led to this website. It's looks cool and artsy... and guess what? It's vegetarian-friendly.

Why Camiguin? It's a place which reminds me of childhood and my paternal grandmother. The last time I was there was almost 2 decades ago. I think it's time to revisit the place, appreciate it as an adult and pay homage to my grandmother's birthplace. All I really cared about 20 years ago were the beach and the meat. Yep, I was a mean meat-eater in my past life. I never liked vegetables and was really a brat towards my grandmother if she won't serve me chicken and pork adobo... which reminds me... was really lovely. I can actually cook her adobo but uses tofu now. It doesn't taste the same of course but who cares?

Bodywork

One of the things that I'd want to do in the future is to study massage... just spend an hour surfing the net for massage schools in the Philippines and these are what I've found so far:

Philippines: An Ashtanga Country

I heard this from one of the people I met at Yoga Thailand this summer. It actually didn't occur to me that the Philippines had become an Ashtanga country until I realized that two of the very few AYRI-certified teachers in the world are already conducting 200-hour training intensive in Manila.

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is a system of hatha yoga taught by Sri Pattabhi Jois at the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute in Mysore, India.

My teacher Paul Dallaghan first conducted a 200-hour intensive two years ago, then just recently, Alex Medin also conducted one in Pasig. Next year, both will have their own intensives in Manila. Paul's will be conducted over a period of 9 months while Alex's will be conducted in 4 straight weeks.

The yoga community in Manila has been growing rapidly with studios opening and teachers getting 200-hour credentials. Fitness First Philippines had their 200-hour multi-style training this year. My friend Fritz joined this training and he found it good in terms of alignment and teaching techniques. He previously trained under Bela Lipat and is currently teaching at Yoga One Banilad and Fitness First in Cebu. Fritz and I were members of Team Yoga 2002.

Here's a list of Yoga Studios/teachers in the Philippines:
