"Yoga can play an important role in risk modification for cardiovascular diseases in mild to moderate hypertension." - (Damodaran, A., Malathi, A., Patil, N., Shah, N., Suryavansihi, & Marathe, S., 2002)
hi Jon, that's an important article. is it possible to post a portion of it in your site? i know that PubMed is free, but it apparently needs that a person register first to read it. at least that is the result i get from following the link. in our CR lists we typically quote entire articles because it's a private membership. our sites are public, so i don't know if it is allowable to copy an entire article. i sometimes have paraphrased the summary points made by an article and written that, pointing to the number of the article, and quoting a portion. it's a lot of work, though.
i can't wait for Jessica to send me more pictures of the Phillipines so i can post them!

AIMS OF STUDY: To study effect of yoga on the physiological, psychological well being, psychomotor parameter and modifying cardiovascular risk factors in mild to moderate hypertensive patients.
METHODS: Twenty patients (16 males, 4 females) in the age group of 35 to 55 years with mild to moderate essential hypertension underwent yogic practices daily for one hour for three months. Biochemical, physiological and psychological parameters were studied prior and following period of three months of yoga practices, biochemical parameters included, blood glucose, lipid profile, catecholmines, MDA, Vit. C cholinesterase and urinary VMA. Psychological evaluation was done by using personal orientation inventory and subjective well being.
RESULTS: Results showed decrease in blood pressure and drug score modifying risk factors, i.e. blood glucose, cholesterol and triglycerides decreased overall improvement in subjective well being and quality of life. There was decrease in VMA catecholamine, and decrease MDA level suggestive decrease sympathetic activity and oxidant stress. CONCLUSION: Yoga can play an important role in risk modification for cardiovascular diseases in mild to moderate hypertension.
Cool. Come to the Philippines and see its beauty yourself. We're planning of exploring the country soon... enjoy local tourism and do yoga at the same time.
Hi Trin... uy thanks for the peanut sauce... haven't tried it yet but will do this weekend. will just fry tofu then add the peanut sauce... yummy, hehehe... or for gado-gado right?
the article didn't say which yogic practices they performed. would be interesting to know. I'm guessing classical-approach to asanas... like sivananda.. meaning savasana almost after every pose.
