Yoga practice then and now...

Then...

Yoga practice = asanas (exercise) + pranayama (breathing) + kriyas (cleansing techniques) + bandhas & mudras (energy direction manipulation)  + dhyana (meditation) + yama/niyama (attitude training)

Now...

Yoga practice = branded asana + scented mat spray + meditation timer on Ipod touch + organic post-asana drink + paid ticket to the next yoga conference + latest yoga paraphernalia

Then, fisherman's pants. Now, branded, flexi, quick-dry shorts. =p

While I find it humorous that this post is classified under "humor" (sorry, bad joke), I think this also raises an interesting point how yoga is perceived today, in a world that (lately) seems to rely so much on brand and appearance and marketing, something that is being continually discussed and debated in the U.S. (Tara Stiles being called the rebel yogi and her "Slim Calm Sexy" book, for example, or lululemon athletica as a brand/company). I wonder if there's a similar conversation here in the yoga community in the Philippines? Blessings :)

C, I still like my 5-year old black shorts for practice, hehehe.

Duality of the message... it's both a joke and reality. While it's true that some yoga practitioners nowadays are preoccupied with their mat sprays, lulu tops, and workshop tickets, there are serious practitioner who remain low-key and discuss yogic principles and current events over inexpensive vegetarian dinner.

My hope is that people who might come across this post will first find it humorous and then stimulate self-reflection.

Thanks for the comments.
